Washington Watchdog Blasts SPFs: 2011 Report

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

The Washington, D.C., based Environmental Working Group – a consumer watchdog that has blasted FDA for not updating sunscreen regulations since the late 1970s and chastizes sunscreen manufacturers for poor product safety standards, has released its 2011 report on the chemical sunscreen industry.

Paramount in EWG’s report: There’s still no evidence that sunscreen prevents skin cancer, and there’s plenty of evidence that many sunscreen chemicals may be dangerous.

“Sunscreens prevent sunburns, but beyond that simple fact surprisingly little is known about the safety and efficacy of these ubiquitous creams and sprays,” EWG reports. “The Food and Drug Administration’s 2007 draft sunscreen safety regulations say: ‘FDA is not aware of data demonstrating that sunscreen use alone helps prevent skin cancer.’”
