Virginia Salon Hardly Felt Earthquake

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Tuesday’s rare East Coast earthquake made a rumble in the national media. But it did little to shake up indoor tanning stores.

2011-08-25 Earthquake copy“There was one girl in the salon at the time, and she works for me,” Bob Sigman, owner of Salon de Sol in Palmyra, Va., told Smart Tan. “She said she saw the chandelier start moving and she got out of the way. Other than that, not too exciting.”

The earthquake — centered in Virginia — hit 5.8 on the Richter scale, producing tremors as far north as New York and as far west as Chicago. News reports showed people fleeing buildings, not sure what to expect, as well as grocery store aisles cluttered with fallen product.

But tanning went on without much interruption. Salon de Sol is located 25 miles southeast from the epicenter and Sigman says there was no structural damage done to his or any other buildings near the salon. He lived in California for a few years, so he had felt earthquake tremors before and said this was mild in comparison.

“It probably lasted 15 to 30 seconds,” says Sigmon. “It’s like a train coming down the tracks; it builds in intensity. It starts slow, you don’t really feel it happening. Then it really gets into it, and then it’s done.”

Most of the damage was done close to the epicenter — the towns of Mineral and Louisa Va. — but it has made for some interesting conversations throughout the day, Sigmon said.

“It’s all anyone is talking about around here,” says Sigmon.
