Using Facebook’s Promoted Posts

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

One of the newest Facebook features, Promoted Posts, gives businesses the option to pay for their posts to show up in more people’s news feeds, as detailed in the article “3 Strategies for Using Facebook’s Promoted Posts” from Entrepreneur.com. Promoted Posts can be a great way to ramp up your Facebook following and engagement, but what kind of posts are worth spending the money to promote? The following strategies from Facebook marketing expert Amy Porterfield are a good place to start:

  1. Don’t confuse “Promoted Post” with sales pitch. Fans aren’t likely to be any more receptive to sales pitches just because you paid for it. Posting something that your target audience cares about is still the key, and offering a special value is always a good idea. Try promoting discounts, special offers or value-added giveaways and contests, but stay away from pitches that don’t offer any extra value.
  2. Craft your Promoted Post with care. It is estimated that only 16 percent of a page’s fans see any given post. The key to reaching more fans, as well as others, is to get people to click, “like” and comment. Effective ways to increase engagement include using a clear, strong call to action, including a photo or video and linking to additional content.
  3. Measure your progress. Facebook makes tracking Promoted Posts easy by displaying the number of people reached at the bottom of the post. Just hover over that data for more detailed information. Use this feedback to decide which kind of posts work and which don’t. Also, make sure to track your costs and compare the results to other online marketing strategies you’ve used.
