TODAY’S HEADLINE STORY: Florida paper wonders why legislature is wasting time on teenage tanning bill

“And yet some, apparently on the sidelines with little else to ponder, find time to play around with a bill outlawing indoor tanning by minors and requiring notes from home or the doc from anyone 16 and older.”

2009-03-30-quote-of-the-week-copy.jpg— Florida’s Bradenton Times, in an editorial questioning the legislative priority of a bill that would prohibit anyone under 18 from using a tanning facility while Florida faces a $3 billion budget deficit. Florida is one of 11 states currently considering such legislation.

What the Times didn’t even take into account is that melanoma isn’t actually increasing in teenagers as the bill’s proponents have alleged, but in fact is skyrocketing in men over the age of 50, who have yet to be the focus of any major public health campaigns about the disease.
