Vitamin D Council founder Dr. John Cannell has been promoting sun exposure as the best source of vitamin D and slamming those in the cosmetics industry who have over-sold sun protection products — including a recent 1 hour radio interview.

Cannell talks about how he remembers when “Sunlight and fresh air” were considered good ideas, and how 20 years ago drug stores sold moisturizers and suntan lotion — but now they over-sell sunscreen.

“I started the Vitamin D Council in 2002. Back then I realized that vitamin D was going to revolutionize healthcare,” Cannell said, pointing out that 36 organs in your body take the steroid hormone precursor we call vitamin D and convert it into the active form — switching on and regulating 1,000 different genes in the human genome.
