Tanned ‘Posh Spice’ Turning Heads with Skin Care Campaign

Soccer phenom David Beckham turned heads this week when he put on his famous wife Victoria’s new charity shirt — a full-body nude (yet tastefully covered) picture of her under the message, “Take Care of the Skin You’re In.”

Beckham’s wife — “Posh Spice” of Spice Girls fame — agreed to pose for the shirt as one of many celebrities supporting a new sun care campaign for a charity called The Interdisciplinary Melanoma Cooperative Group. The campaign is designed to increase awareness of sun damage.

2008-01-31-beckham-copy.jpgVictoria Beckham, who has always sported a nice tan, is being questioned about her presence in the campaign, which features mostly pale personalities like Wynona Rider.

“Although it is sure to gain the campaign column inches and a significant following, using perma-tanned Posh could be seen as a bit of an odd choice to be the face of such a cause,” London’s Daily Mail newspaper reported.

Beckham insists she is practicing “safe sun” today.

All of which begs the question: With vitamin D research now suggesting that regular, moderate sun exposure is not only natural, but may be essential for human health, why wouldn’t a Smart Tanned Posh Spice be a good face for sun care?

“If she’s promoting sensible, non-burning sun, that’s great,” Smart Tan Network Vice President Joseph Levy said. “But if she’s now trying to convince people to stay out of the sun, then we’d have to say she’s sold her soul to the sponsors of ‘sun scare.'”
