Tackling Employee Loyalty

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

When hiring employees, most employers hope that it’s for more than a few weeks. High employee turnover can hinder productivity and sales, which is the lifeblood of your business. But how do you keep your employees loyal to you?

In the IB Times article, “Managing a Small Business: How to Inspire Employee Loyalty,” some very important points from a management prospective and from an employee perspective are discussed by Jeremy Kingsley, a speaker and business expert. The first factor is, as always, hiring the right people. This sounds like a no-brainer, but finding employees who are right for your business is harder than it looks. Some suggestions for hiring the right employee include asking a potential hire “their definition of ‘successful,’” or to get a more in-depth response ask them “to write a one-page essay in 15 minutes.”

The second factor is giving employees your loyalty. Kingsley states in the article that managers that are “preoccupied with short-term, bottom line thinking often view their employees as little more than resources to be hired, fired, and manipulated as the need arises.” This is especially true of the current economy, where some employers use the fear of losing a job or wages to exploit employees. In short, managers should give the same respect to their employees as they expect in return.
