New research has established that low levels of “The Sunshine Vitamin” are now linked to a higher risk of depression in adults over the age of 65, according to an article published Tuesday on a leading internet health information site.

According to an article on NaturalNews.com, National Institute on Aging research shows that 72 percent of seniors suffering from depression also were vitamin D deficient. “(Preventing) vitamin D deficiency in the elderly may become in the future a strategy to prevent the development of depressive mood in the elderly and avoid its deleterious consequences on health,” NaturalNews reported that the researchers wrote. “In addition, normalization of vitamin D levels may be part of any depression treatment plans in older patients.”

Vitamin D levels being promoted in connection with risk reduction for most forms of cancer, heart disease and autoimmune disorders including the flu are only naturally consistent with getting vitamin D from sunshine. Natural dietary sources do not contain adequate vitamin D. Unnatural supplements are another option.

Seasonal depression is caused in part by sunlight deprivation, with sun exposure triggering the production of endorphins in the skin. So it is not surprising that those who are vitamin D deficient might also suffer from depression.
