Sun Exposure Associated with Reduced Crohn’s Risk: New Study

Friday, December 27th, 2013

People living in sunnier areas have a reduced risk of Crohn’s Disease, a new study from France shows. This adds to previous data that suggests that sunlight is preventative against the autoimmune deficiency disease.

Researchers examined data from 98,995 middle-aged women, along with the average ultraviolet radiation of their counties of residence, and found that high residential sun exposure was associated with decreased incidence of Crohn’s.

“This study adds to the available evidence that residential sun exposure is associated with a decreased incidence of [Crohn’s Disease],” the researchers wrote. “Various level of sun exposure may well explain the North-to-South gradient of CD incidence. Vitamin D production through reasonable sunlight exposure may therefore reduce the risk of CD in high-risk populations.”
