Public Catching on to Sunscreen Overuse

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

There is mounting evidence that the public is catching on to the “sun scare” scam machine driving over-use of chemical sunscreen, with a Huffington Post poll offering the latest evidence.

2011-07-14 Public Catching on to Sunscreen Overuse copyHP ran a story about fashion model Giesele’s recent public statements that chemical sunscreen is “poison” and that “I cannot put this poison on my skin…I do not use anything synthetic.” In conjunction with recent Environmental Working Group reports that most sunscreens do not undergo appropriate product safety testing, her comments made headlines worldwide.

It turns out HP readers agree with Giesele. When asked in an HP poll, a combined 58 percent said they think that chemical sunscreen is non-organic and poisonous or believe that the question deserves a deeper look.

A SmartTan.com poll this spring showed even stronger sentiment among those in the sunbed community. In the SmartTan.com poll 84 percent thought ‘Sun Scare’ overstatements about UV risk have gotten so ridiculous that people are starting to tune out dermatology altogether.

“The sunbed community continues to promote the right message about sunscreen products: That they should be used only when sunburn is possible and that over-use makes little sense,” Smart Tan Vice President Joseph Levy said. “We actually promote sunscreen usage more effectively than those who mass-market the product.”
