Pro Athletes Seek Competitive Advantage Via Sunshine: WSJ

Monday, December 11th, 2017

The Wall Street Journal reported that a new trend in athletic organizations including the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburg Steelers embraces an advantage that is as old as the sun: Vitamin D.

“With millions of dollars at stake, elite teams are tracking player health more precisely than ever to make sure their athletes keep playing,” the Journal’s Rachel Bachman writes. “As part of this push, teams in all U.S. major leagues, some college athletic departments and the U.S. men’s and women’s soccer teams have started monitoring players’ vitamin D levels and intake. A few are even recommending more time in the sun, which helps the body produce the nutrient.”

Dietician Lisa McDowell of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings is one of the professionals taking her advise a step further, telling the players to get outside and soak up the natural vitamin D when they get out of the dreary Midwest.

“Red Wings players get little sun due to the team’s Midwestern locale,” Bachman writes. “Ms. McDowell encourages players to spend time outside when the team plays in California so they can soak up vitamin D.”
