Optimism Widespread in January Poll

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Almost half of all tanning operators say their indoor tanning businesses performed better than expected, according to the results of a SmartTan.com poll conducted in the last week of the month — a good sign that 2011 is starting off on the right foot.

According to the SmartTan.com poll, 46 percent thought business was better than expected. Another 24 percent said business was about as expected — meaning 70 percent of the market optimistic23 as expected or better. Only 30 percent said the month was worse than expected.

The poll results are not scientific, but are directional and are consistent with other signs of optimism in the tanning market right now, as many owners report higher customer counts and greater expectations for the 2011 season.

“The market continues to be poised for good long-term growth,” Smart Tan Vice President Joseph Levy said. “Stores are in better capital position and the leaders have invested in human resources and training — they are in good position to sell the service of tanning.”
