New York Enacts New Regulations on Tanning

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

The state of New York put new regulations on the indoor tanning business community into effect on Tuesday.

According to the state’s Web site, the new rules require teens ages 14 to 18 to have parental consent before using a commercial sunbed. Teens will still be free to use privately owned sunbeds without any supervision however.nyflag

The regulations continue to mandate that indoor tanning retailers have warnings posted about the potential risks of UV overexposure as well as requiring all patrons to use protective eyewear. Indoor tanning retailers must also acquire proper operating permits and post them.

The professional tanning community supports constructive regulation such as a parental consent standard for minors under age 18 — a practice already in place in most New York tanning facilities as self-regulation.

“The new regulations shouldn’t be a huge adjustment for Smart Tan members as some of the regulations mimic what they already practice,” Smart Tan Vice President Joseph Levy said.
