Make a Good Employee a Great Manager

Tuesday, April 30th, 2013

In need of a new manager? Look for one within the company, but don’t think that allows you to cut corners on training, advises Inc.com contributor Paul Spieglman in the article “Turn a Good Worker Into a Great Manager: 6 Steps.”

Promoting from within allows you to work with a known commodity and is a great way to maintain continuity, but just because someone is a good employee doesn’t mean you can assume they’ll automatically be a good manager. Even if they’ve been with the company for years, proper management training is necessary to ensure a smooth and effective transition.

Don’t make the mistake of underestimating the influence that managers, middle managers and supervisors have on the business. In the end, it won’t pay to short on training. Providing them with the proper tools for the job will empower and motivate them and will almost certainly pay dividends down the road. This may even require looking outside the company for additional leadership or specific skills training.

So, when you’re looking to move a valuable employee into a leadership position, do the following:

  • Give them a mentor for a period of time.
  • Invest in either internal or external training.
  • Guide them in how to be an example to others.
  • Teach the difference between management and leadership.
  • Check in often to help them with new issues they’ll deal with.
  • Make sure they enjoy the new role.
