Largest Physician Group Moves to Support Vitamin D Message

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

The world’s largest physician organization voted last week to urge authorities to review official government vitamin D recommendations — citing research whose findings point to vitamin D levels that can only be obtained naturally through regular sun exposure.

The American Medical Association passed two vitamin D resolutions at its annual meeting last week — calls for action for the federal government to catch up with the powerful vitamin D message.

AMA also called for the organization to study recommending that doctors start including vitamin D blood tests in their regular testing regimen, calling for a report by the 2009 AMA meeting.

“All of this research is leading right to the fact that the only natural way to obtain the levels of vitamin D now being considered is to get regular UV exposure,” Smart Tan Vice President Joseph Levy said. “Indoor tanning was invented in Europe in light-deprived northern European countries to help people there realize the benefits related to regular UV exposure. The science is coming all the way back around to that.”
