Kim K. Sparks Debate About Tanning for Skin Conditions

Tuesday, March 12th, 2024

Kim Kardashian’s recent viral office tour video, in which she showed her personal tanning bed and red light therapy unit, set off a firestorm of debate about the pros and cons of indoor tanning. Naturally, there were plenty of detractors firing off debunked misinformation, but at least one article from pop culture blog Pop Sugar was refreshingly balanced on the subject.

Kim defended her sunbed usage to critics by saying it helps with her psoriasis, so part of the online debate has revolved around the question of whether tanning is actually beneficial for treatment of psoriasis and other skin conditions. Decades of anecdotal evidence from tanning businesses tells us all we need to know, but it’s encouraging to see a popular media company and the dermatologist they interviewed take a reasonable approach.

Most tanning businesses owners know that some dermatologists do refer clients to commercial tanning facilities to treat certain skin conditions, which Jennifer Holman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist with U.S. Dermatology Partners in Tyler, TX, confirms in the article. “For patients such as these who need to prioritize flexibility when it comes to their inflammatory skin condition treatments, Dr. Holman said she has recommended short-term, low-dose tanning bed exposure,” PopSugar contributor Amanda Elser Murray wrote.

Dr. Holman told PopSugar, “For psoriasis flares and symptomatic cases of pityriasis rosea where in-office NBUVB is not feasible, I usually recommend five minutes of tanning bed exposure, increasing by one minute per session for no more than 10 minutes, three times a week for up to four weeks.”
