Governor Should Veto Under-18 Ban: Editorial

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

The San Francisco Chronicle this week urged California Gov. Jerry Brown to veto legislation that would prohibit those under 18 years old from using commercial sunbeds in salons — one of 600 bills currently on the governor’s desk.

“Not every human problem deserves a law,” Brown said last week in a statement indicating he will veto non-essential legislation distracting from the financially troubled state’s main issues. He has not stated how he will vote on Senate Bill 746 — which the Indoor Tanning Association lobbied strongly against.

The Chronicle, on its editorial page, argued the bill is among many that should be vetoed.

“(The bill) prohibits the use of ultraviolet tanning devices by persons under the age of 18. Current law requires parental permission for youths between 14 and 18 to go to a tanning salon. What’s next: a state law against going to the beach without SPF 45 lotion?” the paper wrote.

California dermatologists – who lobbied for the bill – also lobbied to protect their right to continue to offer phototherapy sessions to psoriasis patients of all ages.
