Does Your Salon Need a New Year’s Resolution?

Monday, December 17th, 2018

In a SmartTan.com poll, more than half of respondents said they do not have a New Year’s Resolution for their indoor tanning business.

There’s a good chance you might not have even thought of a resolution as something you should do for your business, as it tends to be more a personal thing. But, while you likely already have a solid set of long- and short-term business goals in place, there is evidence that a New Year’s Resolution is something greater than the average objective. According to the Inc.com article “6 Reasons Why New Year’s Resolutions for Your Business are a Great Idea,” statistics show that you’re 10 times more likely to accomplish a New Year’s resolution compared to normal goals.

“Possibly because it’s like making a promise to yourself. Forget the naysayers who are sure resolutions are a waste of time. If scaling up your business is part of your 2015 plan, making–and keeping–New Year’s Resolutions will give you cause to celebrate a year from now.” says Emilia DiMenco, CEO of the Women’s Business Development Center in the article.

So, what should your resolution be? Inc contributor Rhett Power lists several options:

1. Develop and/or evaluate my marketing strategy. Has anything changed in the past year that warrants revisions? Probably.

2. Get rid of dead wood. You can’t afford to spend money on underperforming employees for another year.

3. Meet people face-to-face. Step away from the social media and work on improving your real life relationships with customers, vendors and members of your community.

4. Learn one new skill. Read a book, attend an industry event, take an online class…anything that can help you pick up something that will make you a better business owner or operator.

5. Understand your finances. Does an account handle most of your business finances? Do you even understand them? Take the time to personally dig through the numbers yourself, and maybe even take a class or do some research to get a better grasp. You’ll probably pick up on some areas where you need to improve or further exploit.

6. Take time for yourself. Don’t get so caught up in your business that you lose track of the rest of your life. Make sure you’re dedicating enough time to friends, family, and personal activities, and your business will benefit too, as you’ll be able to recharge and refocus.
