Do You Know What Business You’re In?

By Grant Miller, Salon Consultant

One of my new favorite TV shows is “The Profit” with Marcus Lemonis on CNBC. Lemonis is a no-nonsense entrepreneur who finds failing businesses with potential, writes a big check to the owner for a controlling interest, and turns the business around to make it more profitable than ever.

After watching a few episodes, you can quickly figure out Marcus’s rather simple formula for success. He can usually fix any business by focusing on three main areas: The product or service, the people, and the process. I have found that the lessons learned from each episode can easily be translated into many indoor tanning businesses. Instead of waiting until things get so bad that you need Marcus to bail you out, you can improve things yourself by focusing on these key areas. This month, I will specifically discuss how your products and services can determine your success.

Let’s start with your product and services. Obviously we are all in the tanning business. We have tanning beds and booths, spray tan systems, tanning lotions and potions. Many salons also offer services and products like teeth whitening, red light therapy, swimwear, jewelry, etc. But our main business is tanning … or is it?
