Develop an Effective Google Campaign

Monday, August 20th, 2012

Use tips from the Entrepreneur.com article “Building a Successful Google Campaign from Scratch” to increase search engine visibility, capture clicks and increase sales. Authors Perry Marshal and Bryan Todd offer the following advice for determining keywords that will attract the most potential customers:

  1. Define your perfect customer. “We recommend that you stop right now, pull out a piece of paper and write down a one-sentence description of your ultimate money-in-hand-and-ready-to-buy paying customer,” the authors write. This ideal customer knows about your type of product or service but doesn’t know about you. You will use this customer description throughout the keyword selection process.
  2. Identify the keywords that potential customers are using to search for your products and services. Go to Google’s keyword tool and enter some phrases that you think reflect the mind-set of someone that would be searching for your products or services. Go through the list and compare each to your customer description, pick the ones that fit and forget the ones that aren’t.
  3. Determine the number of people searching on those keywords. Consider search volume when choosing your top keywords. To get more specific, add in different variations that fully match your customer description. Detailed insights are available through the keyword tool to help you make the right choices.
  4. Determine how much money advertisers are making off a keyword. Go to Google’s traffic estimator to see how much each keyword costs. You can enter as many keywords as you want and compare them to find the best fit for your customer description. “You’re off to a great start when you’ve got 6 to 12 tightly matched groups of keywords,” the authors write. “Ultimately, you’re best off with a one, single bull’s-eye keyword.”
