New D*action Breast Cancer Prevention Society Announced at ACN Conference

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017

Vitamin D: Its Role in Cancer Prevention and Treatment was presented by Cedric Garland, Dr. PH, F.A.C.E., of the University of California San Diego. He indicated that both new and ongoing research soon to be published indicates that breast cancer can be largely prevented with a vitamin D serum level of approximately 60 ng/ml (150 nmol/L).  While this level is at the upper range of what a consensus of scientists recommend (40-60 ng/ml), it is still considered safe and, is in the physiological range noted in the tribes in Africa.  The new study represents data from 2 randomized trials done by Dr. Joan Lappe of Creighton University and the data from a large prospective cohort from GrassrootsHealth creating a total of 5038 women.  This  new study shows a very clear 80% decrease in breast cancer incidence by going from 20 ng/ml to 60 ng/ml.

Dr. Garland, one of the world’s most published researchers on cancer and vitamin D has maintained for many years that ‘breast cancer is a vitamin D deficiency disease’.  According to Dr. Garland, this new analysis should make that clear to everyone and, should encourage others to take action.

As a result of these findings, the new D*action Breast Cancer Prevention Society was formed by GrassrootsHealth, a 501c3 Public Health Organization dedicated to moving the demonstrated science about nutrients into practice.  This new organization will explicitly address the need for vitamin D testing of all women and, the subsequent educational outreach to inform the population of how vitamin D can help prevent cancer.  The first major outreach of this new Society will be to create community groups to participate with GrassrootsHealth’ myData-myAnswers personalized health program.  This program allows all participants to see not only their own test results and health conditions but analyzes where they are vs a large population of 1000’s.

According to Carole Baggerly, director of GrassrootsHealth and breast cancer survivor herself,  the research report and the health program are the answer to a dream — “to take control of my health with substantial scientific information to help with decision making.”
