‘D’ Deficiency Again Linked to Higher Death Risk: New Study

Friday, June 20th, 2014

Yet another study has recognized vitamin D status as a marker of longer life expectancy, CBS news reports.

This analysis of previous research, published in the British Medical Journal, linked vitamin D deficiency to  increased risk of death from all causes, and cardiovascular disease and cancer in particular. Researchers examined data from eight different studies and 26,018 participants and found that those with the lowest vitamin D levels were 1.5 times as likely to die as those with the highest levels over a 16-year period. While this study does not establish a causal relationship, the researchers noted the consistency of the results across various demographics and variables.

“Despite levels of 25(OH)D strongly varying with country, sex, and season, the association between 25(OH)D level and all-cause and cause-specific mortality was remarkably consistent,” the study authors wrote.

Previously this month, a systemic review of research at the University of California-San Diego found that those with low vitamin D levels were twice as likely. And in April, a questionnaire study regarding sun exposure habits found that Swedish women that sought UV exposure, including sunbed use, had half the all-cause mortality rate of those that avoided UV the most. These studies add to previous literature on the subject.
