Crisis Averted?

Fox Small Business Center has compiled five fundamentals all small businesses should be aware of, as small businesses aren’t immune to the occasional crisis – like bad word of mouth or an employee theft gone public. Here are five ways your salon can protect itself from any crisis that may befall you in the future:

1: Define your core values. With so many attacks on the tanning industry in recent years, letting clients know you are there to help them is essential. Clients will see that you are there for them and not just for their money.

2: Ability to collaborate. In recent years, there has been a big push to buy locally. Get to know other local businesses, see how you can help each other and you may have some allies if you find yourself in a sticky situation.

3: Write your mission statement. Every company has a mission statement to show the public you intend to act in an ethical, fair manner. It’s also something great to fall back on if you’re caught off guard by the press, clients or anyone wanting information on your recent crisis. You can work from there so you won’t feel blindsided.

4: Know your audience. How do you want customers to find out that your state just banned teens from tanning? Or that an employee has been stealing from customers? Make a list of people you want to notify personally about any incidents, that way they can find out directly from you and not the evening news.

5: Learn social media. Social media is that primary way people get their information these days, so make sure you know how to properly utilize sites so you are in control of your reputation.
