Choosing the Right Management Style

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

Read about different approaches to management in the article “Management Styles for Every Situation” from AllBusiness.com. To manage most effectively, leaders must be able to adjust accordingly to whatever situation they are faced with. The correct style depends on several variables including your people’s skill and knowledge, available resources (like time and money) and desired results. Get the most out of your employees by using one or more of these effective management styles.

  1. Participatory Style. “Make sure the individual knows and understands his or her part as it relates to the project or task. When people on your team know where they fit in the big picture, they’re more likely to be motivated to complete the task.” Take time to carefully explain the details to each employee and make sure they all understand their tasks. Ask for their input to give them a sense of value and encourage them to take ownership.
  2. Directing Style. If you have a lot to get done in a short amount of time or have numerous employees to oversee, a directing style may be the best option. Tell employees specifically what they need to do, how they’re going to do it and when they must be finished. Your communication must be detail-oriented and unambiguous. Set clear, short-term goals and be willing and able to make decisions quickly.
  3. Teamwork Style. “When you motivate people to pool their knowledge, the results may exceed your expectations. Often, teams can tackle problems more quickly that what you can accomplish on your own.” This style of management depends heavily on coordinated efforts among the staff, as well as solid communication skills. Make sure to be willing to credit the team for its success and independence.
