Beat Colds and Flus with Vitamin D

Did you know that by raising your vitamin D level to 40-60 ng/ml (100-150 nmol/L) you could lower your risk of not only bone diseases but also everyday colds and flus? GrassrootsHealth, together with 48 world-renowned vitamin D scientists, is committed to spreading the word on vitamin D research and moving that research into practice.

I hope you were able to enjoy some summer sun, but now that fall is here with cooler and shorter days, don’t forget to pay attention to your vitamin D levels. Throughout the fall and winter months, the sun is not high enough in the sky to help make vitamin D, so you need to make sure to get it from other sources. Why does it matter? Along with the colder months comes cold and flu season.

Research from our GrassrootsHealth D*action cohort has shown that having higher vitamin D levels can reduce colds and flus. GrassrootsHealth has a screening program that allows participants to test their levels in the privacy of their homes and complete a health questionnaire. Part of the health information we ask is whether they had a cold or flu in the previous six months.

  • 33% of D*action participants experienced a cold and 10 percent experienced a flu during the six months before their most recent test.
  • Participants with vitamin D levels ≥ 40 ng/ml reported 41 percent fewer cases of the flu and 15 percent fewer colds than participants with levels <20 ng/ml.

In addition to fewer colds and flus, many of our participants with vitamin D levels > 40 ng/ml report less frequent illness overall, and if they do get sick, they tell us they have less severe symptoms and shorter length of illness than they experienced before raising their vitamin D serum levels.
