How Red Light Therapy Improves Tanning Results

Wednesday, May 31st, 2023

Last month, we introduced the brand new SmartSun Therapy Operator Training as a free resource for Smart Tan members and non-members. The 30-minute training video covers five chapters of detailed yet consumer-friendly information about red and near-infrared light therapy. If you haven’t yet watched the training presentation, here’s a more in-depth look at one important part.

You probably already knew that red light improves the condition and appearance of skin but, equally as important for tanning businesses to understand, red and near-infrared light therapy can also accelerate and enhance tanning results.

Ultraviolet A, or UVA light, and Ultraviolet B, or UVB light, are the spectrums of sunlight that stimulate keratinocyte skin cells in the upper layer of skin, to produce melanin and then turn the melanin brown. Sunbed providers have learned that adding red light to UV suntanning sessions dramatically improves the tanning process. Combining red light with UV light energizes and optimizes cell performance and improves how the cells responsible for suntanning perform. Red light therapy also improves circulation and increases the flow of blood and oxygen to the skin. This increased oxidization improves melanin production and increases suntanning performance. Combining red light with UV light sessions has been found to deliver a much better suntan with users reporting smoother and softer skin as compared to their experience with UV-only tanning.
