Vitamin D Protects Against Lung Cancer, Study Suggests

Friday, August 30th, 2013

Non-smokers that take at least 800 IU of vitamin D daily are more than 60 percent less likely to ever be diagnosed with lung cancer, a recent study from the University of Washington suggests.

The large cohort study of nearly 130,000 postmenopausal women found that, among women who had never smoked, those who took more than 800 IU of vitamin D per day had 63 percent decreased lung cancer risk thank those who had never smoked and took less than 100 IU per day.

Researchers also examined a specific segment of the participants who took 1,000 mg/day of calcium and 400 IU/day of vitamin D or placebo. Interestingly, while there was no overall association observed, those who took the calcium and vitamin D and also took less than 1000 IU/day of vitamin D had a 31 percent decreased risk of developing lung cancer. This suggests that taking too much vitamin A may negate the benefits of vitamin D and calcium.
