Study: Vitamin D Improves Quality of Life for Crohn’s Patients

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

Higher vitamin D levels helped those with Crohn’s disease overcome fatigue and limited decreasing muscle strength in a recent randomized, placebo-controlled study from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.

Patients that received supplements and had vitamin D serum levels of more than 30 ng/ml also reported significantly higher quality of life scores than those not taking supplements and with levels less than 30 ng/ml.

“That 24-point increase in quality of life score exceeded the 20-point increase that is considered clinically meaningful to patients and physicians,” researcher Tara Raftery, MD, told MedPage Today.

Even when Crohn’s disease is in remission, patients often suffer from fatigue and loss of muscle strength. The study found that those with higher vitamin D levels correlated significantly with increased grip strength and those with high levels also suffered from significantly less fatigue.

“These findings suggest that patients with Crohn’s disease may benefit from vitamin D supplementation in muscle strength, fatigue, and quality of life,” Raftery told MedPage Today.
