‘D’ Prevents Type 1 Diabetes: Report

Monday, November 19th, 2012

A new University of California-San Diego study has established 50 ng/ml as the target vitamin D blood level for diabetes prevention, the study’s authors reported this week.

Dr. Cedric Garland, the lead author, told the press that increasing vitamin D levels to 50 ng/ml cuts one’s risk of Type 1 diabetes in half.

“While there are a few conditions that influence vitamin D metabolism, for most people, 4000 IU per day of vitamin D3 will be needed to achieve the effective levels,” Garland said in a story published on RedOrbit.com.
