Sun Scare’s First Car: Honda Fit She’s

Monday, October 29th, 2012

Japanese automaker Honda has introduced what is perhaps the world’s first car marketed as a Sun Scare vehicle: The Honda Fit She’s.

“The new Honda Fit She’s is a pretty-in-pink version of the maker’s familiar subcompact that offers a few niceties the maker believes will specifically appeal to distaff buyers, such as a windshield designed to block skin-wrinkling ultraviolet rays,” NBC News reported, saying that the car, introduced only in Japan, includes window glass that blocks all UVA and UVB rays. Most window glass blocks UVB, but not all UVA rays.

The NBC story mis-reported that, “Recent studies have underscored concerns that extended exposure to the sun while driving can be nearly as bad for the skin as spending too much time on the beach.”

That’s Sun Scare.

“That sentence attempts to look like it’s saying something, but it really says nothing,” Smart Tan Executive Director Joseph Levy said. “What does ‘nearly as bad’ mean? And, to our knowledge, there is no research to support a mechanism whereby driving in a car is ‘nearly as dangerous’ as a sunburn. None.”

Honda may be catering to old-school Japanese culture, which glorifies sun exposure for men but not for women.
